888 CLINICALCHEMISTRY, Vol. 35, No. 5, 1989 Technical Briefs (-300 words text) summarize findings that are of interest to a relatively limited audience. Readers desiring fuller details may obtain them by writing directly to the author(s) at the address given. with normal zinc concentrations in urine ± 3.5 niol/L (6)], addition of 1.24 pmol of zinc per literfrom the catheter would cause an error of12-35%. It is notable that 40% ofthe zinc was released from the catheterwithin the first hour. The Silkomed catheter contained relatively little zinc (1.4 ± 0.3 mol/g) and releases were so small (0.03 ± 0.01 iiniol/8 h) that this influence on urinaryzinc would remain unnoticed. We thereforeconsideritsuitable forstudies on zinc excretion.

Is Foley Catheter Able to Drain the Bladder Completely in the Morning for Patients in ICU?

Introduction: Foley catheters are assumed to drain the bladder completely. It is known that uncompleted drainage leads to multiple complications, such as asymptomatic bacteriuria and urinary tract infection. Methods: From 116 patients, who were admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) for more than 24 hours, were enrolled in this study. To measure the urine level in bladder in the morning before a...

Bacterial effect of hydrogen peroxide on urinary tract pathogens.

Bacterial contamination of urinary drainage bags is a frequent source of bladder bacteriuria in patients with indwelling catheters. Previous work demonstrated that the addition of 30 ml of 3% H2O2 prevented bacterial contamination of urinary drainage bags for up to 8 h in patients with urinary infections (greater than 10(5) colony-forming units per ml). Survival curves of a variety of organisms...

Culture-dependent and -independent investigations of microbial diversity on urinary catheters.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection is caused by bacteria, which ascend the catheter along its external or internal surface to the bladder and subsequently develop into biofilms on the catheter and uroepithelium. Antibiotic-treated bacteria and bacteria residing in biofilm can be difficult to culture. In this study we used culture-based and 16S rRNA gene-based culture-independent method...

An easy technique for removal of knotted catheter in the bladder: percutaneous suprapubic cystoscopic intervention.

Uncontaminated urine samples are indispensable to precisely diagnose urinary tract infections in new-borns or infants. Among many clinical interventions for urine collection are described, the most common noninvasive practice is using sterile bags, associated with significant contamination of samples. In children, however, invasive methods i.e. catheterization, are generally needed for reliable...

Evaluation of Sensitivity and Specificity of Urine Survivin As A New Molecular Marker in Diagnosis of Bladder Tumors

Bladder cancer is one of the most common forms of cancers in the world. The current gold standards for itsdiagnosis are cystoscopy and urine cytology. Cystoscopy, a naked eye assessment of the bladder, is invasive, uncomfortable and costly with a great deal of personal variability in its results; while urine cytology has high specificity but low sensitivity, particularly for low-grade les...
